Let Me Introduce You To Some Her-story.

Harvest Festival Parade 2012In 1920, women finally got the right to vote, but not before they were jailed, beaten, and even declared insane, for picketing the White House, carrying signs asking for the vote. In 1965 the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Connecticut’s ban on contraceptives for married women. In 1972 it struck down Massachusetts’ ban on contraception for unmarried women. in 1973, the Court established a woman’s right to a safe and legal abortion. In 1970, Congress passed Title X of the Public Health Care Service Act, making grants available to agencies to provide comprehensive family planning and health care services. In 1994 Congress enacted the Violence Against Women Act and reauthorized it again in 2000 and in 2005. Congress has had refused to reauthorize this Act because it has been broadened to extend to immigrant women and LGBT. In 2003, Congress passed a bill in response to women having been raped by U.S. contractors in Iraq. In 2011 a bill was introduced in the House to amend Title X, to prohibit family planning grants from being awarded to any entity that also performed abortions. Congress outlawed “partial birth” abortion in 2003. In 2012, the Senate attempted to amend the Affordable Health Care Act to allow any employer who has religious or conscientious objections, to prevent birth control or any other medical procedure from being offered through health insurance policies. Seven states have fully defunded or attempted to defund Planned Parenthood. In 2011 and in 2012, 8 states have passed laws mandating medically unnecessary vaginal ultrasounds for women seeking an abortion.

Because of our Foremothers, Lucy Burns, Dora Lewis, Alice Paul, Pauline Adams, Edith Ainge, Berthe Arnold and Helena Weed, today, we have the tools to stand up for ourselves and make our own choices. Today we have the voice to demand that our Elected Representatives, ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. We need 38 states to make this the 28th amendment to the United States Constitution. We have 35 states now and we only need 3 more. The 15 states whose legislatures have not ratified the Equal Rights Amendment are as follows: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Utah, and Virginia. We only have to convince 3 states, only 3, out of the 15 states that I just listed, that have not yet ratified the Equal Rights Amendment.

First and foremost, we are human beings, we deserve the right to choose for ourselves. We are not chattel, we are not pets, we are not mindless. We are brilliant, we are beautiful and we are priceless. We are women. Let’s make this the 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution. Let’s make her-story.

Nevada Senate Members

03/10/2012

To: Nevada Senate Members,

Current Legislators

Via E-Mail

Women of this Great Nation—No not just Women but Humanity needs your help to bring to light that the Equal Rights Amendment has never been ratified.

“The Equal Rights Amendment, first proposed in 1923 to affirm that women and men have equal rights under the law, is still not part of the U.S. Constitution.

The ERA was passed out of Congress in 1972 and has been ratified by 35 of the necessary 38 states. When three more states vote yes, it is possible that the ERA could become the 28th Amendment. The ERA could also be ratified by restarting the traditional process of passage by a two-thirds majority in the Senate and the House of Representatives, followed by ratification by legislatures in three-quarters (38) of the 50 states.”

“Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.”

The “3-state strategy,” developed during the 1990s, provides a very promising means for attaining that goal SOON. Achieving ratification in just three of the 15 remaining not-yet-ratified states*, and then ensuring that the Equal Rights Amendment is therefore added to the Constitution.

Nevada is one of the 15 states that have not ratified the ERA.

THIS IS WHERE YOU COME IN!!!

Please, in the upcoming session, make sure that this issue comes up for ratification on Nevada’s Senate Floor.

Let’s Not Keep Women Waiting Any Longer!

From: Nevada Progressive Democrats of America Southern Nevada Chapter

*The 15 not-yet-ratified states are Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Utah, and Virginia.

PDA of Southern Nevada Commitment to the #ERA

May I have your attention please … Southern Nevada PDA has committed itself to passing the Equal Rights Amendment in Nevada. In lieu of this commitment, we are seeking your help to publicize and draw attention to the fact that A) Nevada has not voted to pass the Equal Rights Amendment and B) 3 more states are needed in order to Ratify the bill and pass it into law.

Among some of the other states that have not voted for the Equal Rights Amendment are, Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Utah and Virginia.

35 states have passed the bill, we need 38 states for Ratification into Law.

We need volunteers to blog, write emails/letters to the editor, write emails/letters to the Nevada Legislature.

For more information on this topic, in order to be more informed about the bill itself, the process and its history, please click on this link —> http://equalrightsamendment.org/

It Happened To Me

Please understand that this letter is to help make people aware of what happens to a kid when he/she grows up after having been sexually abused and having been ignored when that child reached out for help, yet noone listened.
I attended Sayreville War Memorial High School between 1966 and 1969. I was enrolled in what then was known as “college prep” classes since I was very bright academically. School was fine, a refuge, really, for me. You see, I was being sexually abused by my father at home.
One day, I had had enough, so I went to my guidance counselling office and told the counsellor exactly what was happening to me at home. I was desperate for help to get away from what was being done to me. She listened to me intently, hearing my every word. She then had me draw a picture of myself. Honest to God, that is the absolute truth.
After that, I heard nothing more from my counsellor. NOTHING!!
I then went to the police. By then, I was living in what was then called Madison Township. The policeman taking the report was kind to me. He wrote everything I told him down on his pad. He left.
After that, I heard nothing more from the police. NOTHING!!
Yes, I did finally get the counselling I desperately needed years later when everything hit the wall for me. I have dealt with the abuse I suffered, though I went through another living hell going through the counselling I received.
But now, in the face of what is occurring at Penn State, I feel such a pain of desperation afflicting me all over again. But this time it is because noone did anything to help me. That child in me is sobbing right now. I’ve lived my life always trying to be so strong and independent because I was the only one who ever helped me. Thank God I was blessed with an intellect and temperment to be able to do what was right and good in my life.
I went on to college. I never drank or used drugs, nor was I ever promiscuous like so many victims of abuse succumb to. I also did not “pass it (the abuse) on” to my children. It ended with me.
So, you may now be wondering,”What’s her point?”
My point is this: If a child EVER confides in you that they are being abused, PLEASE LISTEN!!! And PLEASE do the right thing and get them the help they so desperately want and need!!
If I can, by telling my story, help any child by you having listened to them, then that child in me will be set free from the pain of having been so let down and ignored so many long years ago.
Thank you for listening to me now.

This is How You Fix Congress!

Warren Buffett, in a recent interview with CNBC, offers one of the
best quotes about the debt ceiling:

“I could end the deficit in 5 minutes,” he told CNBC. “You just
pass a law that says that anytime there is a deficit of more
than 3% of GDP, all sitting members of Congress are ineligible
for re-election/

The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds)
took only 3 months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple!
The people demanded it. That was in 1971 – before computers, e-mail,
cell phones, etc.

Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took one (1) year
or less to become the law of the land – all because of public pressure.

Warren Buffet is asking each addressee to forward this email to
a minimum of twenty people on their address list; in turn ask
each of those to do likewise.

In three days, most people in The United States of America will
have the message. This is one idea that really should be passed
around.

_*Congressional Reform Act of 2011*_

1. No Tenure / No Pension.

A Congressman/woman collects a salary while in office and receives no
pay when they’re out of office.

2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social
Security.

All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the
Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into
the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the
American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all
Americans do.

4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise.
Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

5. Congress loses their current health care system and
participates in the same health care system as the American people.

6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the
American people.

7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen/women are void
effective 1/1/12. The American people did not make this
contract with Congressmen/women.

Congressmen/women made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in
Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers
envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their
term(s), then go home and back to work.

If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will
only take three days for most people (in the U.S.) to receive
the message. Don’t you think it’s time?
